Chances are your childhood was filled with days playing under the sun with family and friends. Now that you’re older, wouldn’t it be nice to look back at those memories and relive them?
Here are 7 local sports and games that will surely bring back the fun and nostalgia of your childhood:
1. Arnis
When you think of our local sports, arnis always comes to mind. Considered the national martial art of the Philippines, this discipline traces its history back to pre-Hispanic times, and it’s still practiced by many Filipinos as both a sport and a way to get fit.
There’s also a renewed interest in arnis, thanks to the movie “Dune” that featured the sport, which means it’s a good time for you to get involved too!
2. Agawan ng base

Your childhood wouldn’t be complete without playing “agawan ng base” - a classic Filipino game.
In this game, your team will do everything to protect your base from being tagged by your opponents, while the other team will also create a daisy chain to break your fortress. This game is so much fun that you’ll get thirsty from all that adrenaline, so make sure to bring your Thermos® One-Push Tumbler with you.
3. Kick
Traditionally called “sipa,” you’ll see a lot of kids playing this game, especially during the summer. Kick is played using a makeshift “shuttlecock” made with bits of string attached to a flattened soda cap or the aluminum cap of roofing nails that are kicked by different players to prevent the shuttlecock from falling.
This game will make you sweat because it tests your coordination, focus and balance. Make sure to bring your Thermos® Sports Bottle to keep yourself hydrated.
4. Tumbang preso

You can’t be Filipino and not know about “tumbang preso,” the most popular street game in the country. Using just slippers and a can, all the other players will need to hit that target while the “taya,” or “it” will protect it from being put down.
Also called “tumba lata” or “bato lata,” this game tests your accuracy in hitting the target while having a lot of fun with friends.
5. Patintero

A game that has been played by generations of Filipinos, the game “patintero” would be described as classic and nostalgic. Running around and making sure that you don’t get caught by the “bantay” is so much fun you’ll hardly notice that it’s also giving you a good workout.
Since this game can consume a lot of energy, you should bring some healthy snacks like a couple of hard-boiled eggs to keep inside the Thermos® Food Jar.
6. Luksong baka

Translating to “jump over the cow,” this traditional Filipino game involves up to 10 players who jump over the person called “baka” or cow. The goal here is to jump successfully without touching or falling over the cow or else you get eliminated.
In some parts of the country, “luksong baka” is also played by jumping over as many stacked fists as players can manage. The last to survive will be declared the winner.
7. Chinese garter

Finally, there’s one of the most popular games for Filipino kids in school - Chinese garter.
Using an elastic rubber band held by two people, a player jumps over the band using different maneuvers to get through every obstacle. Some might try tumbles and flips, especially when the rubber band is already at head height!
